Precision Aviation with LPV

An LPV, or Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance, approach is the highest precision GPS aviation instrument approach currently available without specialized aircrew training requirements. LPV approaches are designed to provide 16 meter horizontal accuracy and 20 meter vertical accuracy 95 percent of the time.

Universal Avionics SBAS-Flight Management System (FMS) installation complies with AC 20-138C for navigation using GPS and SBAS (within coverage of a SBAS complying with ICAO Annex 10) for enroute, terminal area, non-precision approach operations (including "GPS", "or GPS", and "RNAV" approaches), and approach procedures with vertical guidance (including "LNAV/VNAV" and "LPV").

Together, Universal Avionics and the FAA have developed a solution that provides an affordable and expeditious process for approval of LPV-capable SBAS-FMS upgrades. This solution allows Universal Avionics non-SBAS FMS operators currently approved for fully coupled 3D pseudo ILS approaches (non-LPV approaches) to obtain certification approval for a new Universal Avionics SBAS-FMS with LPV via a specially designed "Engineering Assisted Field Approval Process" (EAFAP).

Universal Avionics' LP/LPV Monitor is required in single SBAS-FMS integrations when seeking compliance approval for LPV approach capability. For detailed information about LPV, download a copy of the Universal Avionics' White Paper, "Operating in Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) Airspace."
